Haag-Streit

Goldmann accuracy. In your hand.

The Perkins MK3 brings Goldmann applanation tonometry to a hand-held instrument. The clinician turns a thumb-wheel until the fluorescein semicircles meet, then reads the scale; built-in blue LEDs light the mires in any room. It takes reusable Haag-Streit Goldmann prisms or sterile Tonosafe disposable prisms, and is designed for patients who are hard to assess conventionally: bed-bound, wheelchair users, children and community patients. A rechargeable battery gives about 25 hours of use.

Why the Perkins MK3

Goldmann, made portable

The Perkins applies the Goldmann principle: the force needed to flatten a fixed area of cornea, read directly from the thumb-wheel scale and multiplied by ten to give mmHg.

For patients who cannot sit up

Haag-Streit designed it for patients who are hard to measure at a slit lamp, including bed-bound, wheelchair-using, paediatric and community patients.

Light where you need it

Built-in blue LEDs illuminate the fluorescein mires, giving a clear image in varied ambient light, running cool and saving energy for longer operating time.

Reusable or disposable prisms

The Tonogrip holder takes reusable Haag-Streit Goldmann prisms or sterile, single-use Tonosafe prisms, which avoid prism cleaning and disinfection between patients.

Check it yourself

Supplied 2 g and 5 g test weights and a setting block let the user verify calibration at zero, 2 and 5 before each session.

Where it is used

Ophthalmology and optometry clinics, hospital wards, theatres and recovery, paediatric eye care, domiciliary and community eye services.

Questions

Is the Perkins MK3 available in the UAE and the GCC?

KGG sources the Perkins MK3 and Tonosafe prisms on request for eye clinics, hospitals and community services in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, supplied subject to registration in each destination country. Availability is confirmed with each quotation.

How does it compare with a slit-lamp Goldmann tonometer?

It uses the same Goldmann applanation method and prisms in a hand-held body. Haag-Streit describes its accuracy as on a par with its other tonometers, and it can be used where a slit lamp cannot, such as at the bedside.

Does it need anaesthetic drops?

Yes. As with any applanation tonometer, the cornea is anaesthetised and fluorescein is applied before measurement. Rebound tonometers such as the iCare range work without drops.

How is calibration checked?

Haag-Streit advises a user check before every session with the supplied 2 g and 5 g weights and setting block, and an annual service by a Haag-Streit-trained engineer.

Can it be stored and used in Gulf heat?

Haag-Streit specifies use at +10 to +35 °C and storage at −10 to +55 °C. Keep it in its case in an air-conditioned room; avoid vehicles and direct sun.
