Passy-Muir
Speech and swallow, restored.
The Passy Muir Valve opens as the patient breathes in and closes at the end of inspiration, staying closed through exhalation without leakage. Air is redirected around the tracheostomy tube and up through the vocal folds, so the patient can speak without finger occlusion. The PMV 2001 (purple) is the low-profile valve for everyday use; the PMV 007 (aqua) is designed to sit in-line in ventilator circuit tubing. Both are single-patient, multiple-use and made in the USA.
Key specifications
Why the Passy Muir Valve
Closed until you breathe in
The valve stays in a bias-closed position except during inspiration, then closes and remains closed through exhalation without leakage, directing air through the larynx for voice.
More than speech
Passy-Muir states that restoring a closed respiratory system can improve swallowing, may reduce aspiration and supports a stronger cough for oral secretion management. Aspiration risk must still be assessed for each patient.
In-line with the ventilator
All four valves can be used on or off the ventilator with appropriate tubing. The aqua PMV 007 is designed to insert directly into standard disposable ventilator circuit tubing.
Neonate to adult
Indicated for short- and long-term tracheostomised and ventilator-dependent neonatal, paediatric and adult patients, including as an assessment step towards decannulation.
Where it is used
Intensive care, step-down and acute wards, long-term ventilation units, rehabilitation and home care, under the direction of physicians, speech-language pathologists and respiratory therapists.
In the box
One valve per pack (single unit). The PMV 2001 includes one PMV Secure-It to attach the valve to the tracheostomy tie. Pack sizes and configurations are confirmed with the quotation.

What is the difference between the PMV 2001 and the PMV 007?
The purple PMV 2001 is a low-profile valve (15 mm ID, 23 mm OD) for everyday use, compatible with the PMA 2000 Oxygen Adapter and Secure-It. The aqua PMV 007 (15 mm ID, 22 mm OD) is designed to insert into ventilator circuit tubing and is not compatible with those accessories.
Can it be used with an inflated cuff?
No. An inflated tracheostomy cuff and foam-filled cuffed tubes are contraindications. The cuff must be completely deflated so air can pass around the tube and through the upper airway. The valve is not intended for endotracheal tubes or laryngectomy patients.
How long does a valve last?
Passy-Muir states a lifetime of two months when cleaned and used properly. Replace it sooner if it becomes sticky, noisy, vibrates or shows increased resistance. A back-up valve allows one to be cleaned while the other is in use.
Who should fit the valve?
It is a prescription device. Placement follows a clinical assessment by a trained team, typically including a physician, speech-language pathologist and respiratory therapist; patients and caregivers use it under professional supervision.
