Otovent
Equalise the ear. Drug-free.
The user inflates a special Otovent balloon through one nostril via a nose piece; the rise in nasal pressure opens the Eustachian tube and ventilates the middle ear. The IFU sets use at least three times a day in the first week, then twice a day, with a review by a healthcare professional after 2–3 weeks. Trials cited by the maker were in children, including a 320-child primary-care trial (CMAJ, 2015), and NICE issued a Medtech Innovation Briefing in 2016. It is also used for pressure symptoms after flying, diving or hyperbaric treatment.
Key specifications
Why the Otovent
Opens the Eustachian tube
Inflating the balloon from the nose raises nasal pressure so the Eustachian tube opens, the middle ear is ventilated and fluid can clear.
Evidence in children
The maker cites four randomised trials in children, summarised in a 2016 NICE Medtech Innovation Briefing, including a 320-child trial in primary care.
Drug-free, at home
No medicines and no surgery: treatment is done at home, with children supervised by an adult. A companion Otovent app is available.
For flying and diving
Used 3–4 times as descent begins, or before and after diving or hyperbaric treatment, to relieve pressure symptoms.
Where it is used
ENT and audiology clinics, paediatric and family practices, pharmacies, and travellers and divers with pressure problems.
