i-gel
No cuff to inflate.
i-gel is a single-use, latex- and PVC-free supraglottic airway whose soft thermoplastic elastomer cuff mirrors the perilaryngeal anatomy, so no cuff inflation is needed. Intersurgical states that a proficient user can insert it in under five seconds. Every size except size 1 has a gastric channel for venting and passing a nasogastric tube, and the device includes a bite block, buccal cavity stabiliser and epiglottic rest; adult sizes can also serve as a conduit for fibreoptic-guided intubation.
Key specifications
Why the i-gel
Shaped like the anatomy
The soft, gel-like cuff mirrors the perilaryngeal framework and seals without inflation, which Intersurgical says reduces compression and displacement trauma.
Fast to place
With no cuff to inflate and a buccal cavity stabiliser that stops rotation, a proficient user can insert the i-gel in under five seconds.
Gastric access built in
The gastric channel gives early warning of regurgitation, allows a nasogastric tube to be passed and vents the stomach (all sizes except size 1).
A route to intubation
Adult sizes can be used as a conduit for fibreoptic-guided intubation in a known or unexpectedly difficult airway.
Where it is used
Operating theatres and day surgery for fasted patients, resuscitation in hospital and prehospital care, EMS and air ambulance, neonatal to adult.
