BD MiniDraw

Lab tests. From a fingertip.

BD MiniDraw standardises fingerstick collection with a finger sleeve in four sizes, a BD Microtainer contact-activated lancet and barcoded capillary tubes. The SST tube contains a clot activator and gel separator and delivers serum for 17 cleared chemistry and lipid analytes; a K2EDTA tube is cleared for haemoglobin and haematocrit on Sysmex XN-Series analysers. BD states it uses a fraction of the volume of a venous draw and designed it for settings without a phlebotomist, such as retail pharmacies and clinics.

Why the BD MiniDraw

No phlebotomist needed

The system standardises the fingerstick procedure so that healthcare workers trained on the device, but not in phlebotomy, can collect samples, according to BD's FDA submission.

A fraction of the blood

BD states MiniDraw yields lab-quality results from a fraction of the volume of a venous draw. With Babson's BetterWay workflow, results can come from as few as six drops.

Serum for chemistry and lipids

The SST tube separates serum with a clot activator and gel barrier, cleared for 17 analytes including liver and kidney markers, electrolytes, glucose and a full lipid panel.

H&H on Sysmex

A separate K2EDTA tube is cleared for haemoglobin and haematocrit when analysed on Sysmex XN-Series haematology analysers.

Traceable by design

Each tube carries a unique barcode that links the sample to the patient from collection to the laboratory.

Where it is used

Retail pharmacies, physician offices, urgent care and other ambulatory sites, plus clinical and laboratory settings where a trained user is present.

Questions

Is BD MiniDraw available in the UAE and the GCC?

KGG can enquire with BD on request for laboratories, clinic groups and pharmacy networks in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, supplied subject to registration in each destination country. MiniDraw is currently marketed in the USA, so availability for export is confirmed with each quotation.

Which tests can be run from a MiniDraw sample?

In the USA the SST tube is cleared for 17 analytes: albumin, ALP, ALT, AST, BUN, calcium, chloride, creatinine, glucose, potassium, sodium, total bilirubin, total protein, HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides. The H&H tube is cleared for haemoglobin and haematocrit on Sysmex XN-Series analysers.

Who can collect the sample?

Trained healthcare workers, including phlebotomists, clinicians, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. The system is designed for people trained on the device who may not have phlebotomy training.

Can it be used for children?

No. The FDA indication covers individuals 18 years and older whose finger fits one of the four sleeve sizes.

Do we need specific laboratory analysers?

The H&H tube is cleared only for Sysmex XN-Series analysers. For chemistry and lipid testing, confirm compatibility with your laboratory's analysers and workflow with BD before ordering.
