POWERbreathe
Strength for every breath.
The POWERbreathe Plus is a mechanical pressure-threshold trainer. To open its calibrated spring valve on each breath in, the user must generate a set inspiratory pressure, while breathing out has no resistance. Training is 30 breaths, twice a day, and the load is raised in 11 steps as the breathing muscles get stronger. The Medic Plus has the lightest starting load of the range and is used by clinicians alongside medication and in pulmonary rehabilitation.
Key specifications
Why the POWERbreathe Plus
Resistance training for breathing
Like weights for the diaphragm and rib-cage muscles: the user breathes in against a set load, then breathes out freely so the muscles can relax.
The lightest start
The Medic Plus starts at 9 cmH₂O, or 3 cmH₂O without its spring, the lowest load of POWERbreathe's mechanical trainers. This suits weaker patients.
Three strengths for fitness
The Plus comes in Light, Medium and Heavy resistance, up to 274 cmH₂O, for new users through to athletes who have reached the top of a medium model.
Simple daily routine
Thirty breaths twice a day, raising the load by about a quarter turn when 30 breaths become easy. Users usually feel less breathless within 4 to 6 weeks.
Where it is used
Pulmonary and cardiac rehabilitation, physiotherapy, pre- and post-operative programmes, home training for people with breathlessness, sport and performing arts.

Which model should a patient use?
For people with a medical condition or very weak breathing muscles, POWERbreathe recommends the Medic Plus, which starts at 9 cmH₂O. Light suits new users, Medium moderately fit to very fit people, and Heavy only those who have maxed out a Medium.
Who should not use it?
The manual advises against use with costochondritis or in asthma with low symptom perception and frequent severe attacks. It lists conditions needing medical advice first, including previous spontaneous pneumothorax, pulmonary hypertension and recent abdominal surgery.
Can several patients share one device?
No. POWERbreathe recommends single-user devices, not shared even within a family, to prevent cross-infection. Clinics issue one device per patient.
Does it also train breathing out?
No. The Plus and Medic Plus train inspiration only. POWERbreathe makes separate devices for expiratory training (EX1) and electronic K-Series trainers that measure performance.
