Hartwell Medical
Moulds to the patient. Holds firm.
The EVAC-U-SPLINT adult mattress is filled with thousands of polystyrene beads. Once the patient is positioned and the air is drawn out with the aluminium hand pump, it becomes a rigid shell shaped to that patient, without applying pressure. Hartwell states evacuation takes under 25 seconds, and the patient can be carried supine, with knees flexed or with the torso raised 30°. Six padded handles, colour-coded side-release buckles and the MaxiValve quick-connect valve suit EMS, rescue and hospital transfer teams.
Key specifications
Why the EVAC-U-SPLINT Mattress
Moulds, then holds
The beads conform to the patient's body without pressure, then lock rigid under vacuum, spreading body weight evenly and reducing pressure points.
Rigid in seconds
The aluminium foot-stirrup pump evacuates the mattress in under 25 seconds. The MaxiValve gives an audible click on connection, works with gloves and in low light.
Secure, even on its side
Integrated slats and a rescue-type strap system keep the patient secure, even when turned on their side for airway management.
Warm and X-ray compatible
The polystyrene beads act as a thermal insulator that helps maintain core body temperature, and the flexible fabric and non-magnetic valve are X-ray compatible.
Where it is used
Ambulance and EMS services, mountain and ski rescue, civil defence, sports medicine and events, and hospital transfers. Hartwell notes it was chosen for summer and winter Olympic Games.

Questions
Is the EVAC-U-SPLINT Mattress available in the UAE and the GCC?
KGG sources the EVAC-U-SPLINT Mattress on request for ambulance services, civil defence, hospitals, sports medicine teams and industrial rescue units in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman, supplied subject to registration in each destination country. Availability is confirmed with each quotation.
Is there a paediatric version?
Yes. The EVAC-U-SPLINT Pediatric Mattress is designed for children aged 2 to 10, measures 127 × 51 × 5 cm unfolded, carries up to 34 kg / 75 lb, has four padded handles and evacuates in under 20 seconds.
Can it be lifted end to end, for example on stairs?
No. Hartwell says the mattress must not be lifted by itself from the ends; use the point-of-balance handles. For stairs, place a CombiCarrierII, long spine board, scoop or flat stretcher underneath, and use a basket stretcher for vertical rescue. Hands-on training is required before use.
Is it suitable for Gulf heat?
Hartwell gives an operating range of −34 °C to 66 °C (−30 °F to 150 °F) and asks for storage above freezing. It does not publish a separate upper storage limit, so keep it away from prolonged direct sun in vehicles.
How is it cleaned?
Clean the mattress and strap with soap and water, a mild detergent or a commercial cleaner/disinfectant, with the red cap on the MaxiValve. A 1–2% bleach solution is acceptable if rinsed thoroughly; dry the mattress before returning it to its case.
