AvantSonic
Bladder volume. Without a catheter.
AvantSonic bladder scanners use a 2.5 MHz 3D mechanical sector probe that sweeps a 120° fan through the lower abdomen and calculates bladder volume, so staff can check retention or post-void residual without a catheter. The Z5 and Z3 consoles show the bladder outline on a colour touchscreen, guide the user with on-screen arrows, store 1,000 cases and print results. The AS-2 is a hand-held unit with a 1.54-inch display that finds the bladder centre on its own and reads the volume aloud. All models are intended for qualified medical professionals.
Key specifications
Why the AvantSonic bladder scanner
Volume in one sweep
A 2.5 MHz 3D mechanical probe scans a 120° fan through the bladder and calculates its volume from 0 to 999 ml, so a retention or residual check takes moments at the bedside.
Fewer needless catheters
AvantSonic positions its scanners as a daily ward tool to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI), and to time intermittent catheterisation in patients recovering bladder function.
Guided, not guessed
The Z5 and Z3 show arrows telling the user which way to move the probe; the hand-held AS-2 finds the bladder centre on its own before it measures, reducing errors from probe position.
Pick the format
Choose the 8-inch Z5 console, the 7-inch Z3 on its cradle, or the pocket-sized AS-2 with a 1.54-inch screen and a voice read-out of the result.
Records that travel
The Z5 and Z3 store 1,000 cases, print results, show a patient QR code after each scan and synchronise patient information to a host computer.
Where it is used
Hospital wards, urology and gynaecology, post-operative care, rehabilitation and spinal units, stroke care, and radiotherapy departments that check bladder filling before pelvic treatment.

Which model should I choose?
The Z5 has the largest screen (8-inch touchscreen) and suits busy wards. The Z3 has a 7-inch screen on a probe cradle. The AS-2 is a hand-held scanner with a small display and voice read-out, for staff who move from bed to bed.
How accurate is it?
AvantSonic states ±7.5% for the Z5 and Z3 across 0–999 ml. The FDA summary for the AS-2 gives ±10 ml below 100 ml and ±7.5% from 100 ml.
Are there patients it should not be used on?
The AS-2 510(k) summary says it is not for pregnant patients, patients with ascites, abdominal scars, a bladder catheter in place, or wounds at the scan site, as these affect accuracy or safety.
What happened to the PadScan DS3?
The DS3 was cleared with the Z3 and Z5 in 2018 but is no longer on AvantSonic's product list. KGG quotes the current Z5, Z3 and AS-2.
