VitalStim

Retrain the swallow.

VitalStim Plus combines NMES with surface EMG biofeedback in a hand-held, battery-powered unit. The VitalStim waveform stimulates the swallowing muscles of the anterior neck in co-contraction mode on up to four channels, while VMS mode allows custom, sequenced protocols. In sEMG and triggered-stimulation modes the patient sees and hears muscle activity and starts the swallow, with stimulation added once a threshold is reached. Sessions can be mirrored to a computer or tablet over Bluetooth.

Why the VitalStim Plus

Stimulation built for swallowing

The VitalStim waveform is applied to the swallowing muscles of the anterior neck in co-contraction mode, with up to four channels stimulating and pausing together.

Biofeedback the patient can see

sEMG signals are displayed on screen and turned into sound, encouraging effort and providing documentation to measure progress.

Patient-triggered stimulation

In sEMG + Triggered Stim mode the patient starts the swallow; once the set threshold is reached, the unit switches to stimulation to increase the exercise load.

Custom protocols

VMS mode lets clinicians set phase duration, frequency and work and rest times, and sequence channels to follow the natural swallowing order.

Where it is used

Hospital wards from ICU onwards, stroke and neuro-rehabilitation units, head and neck cancer services and outpatient dysphagia clinics, by trained clinicians.
